While lemon juice (no peels) will help to alleviate stale food odors, with repeated use, the acidity of the fruit can eventually damage the metal inside of your machine.

A good way to prevent a clogged and smelly garbage disposal is to rinse the disposal well after each use. This will keep it clean and smelling fresh. You can also run water with a small amount of bleach to thoroughly clean the disposal and avoid odors and grime buildup.
